Corvallis, OR (SportsNetwork.com) - Jordan Villamin's 67-yard touchdown put Oregon State ahead and Michael Doctor's late 35-yard interception return sent the Beavers to a 35-27 upset of No. 7 Arizona State on Saturday.
Terron Ward rushed for 148 yards and a score on 19 carries and Storm Woods added a touchdown and 125 yards on 11 totes for Oregon State (5-5, 2-5 Pac-12), which snapped a four-game skid.
Sean Mannion completed 19-of-33 passes for 251 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, Villamin finished with 127 yards on four catches and Victor Bolden hauled in seven passes for 72 yards and a score in the win.
Taylor Kelly threw for 264 yards on a 22-of-44 completion rate with two touchdowns and two interceptions for the Sun Devils (8-2, 5-2), who were coming off a 55-31 win over Notre Dame.
The loss virtually ended Arizona State's hopes for a bid in the inaugural College Football Playoff.
"I'm just as proud of our guys right now as I was last week," said ASU coach Todd Graham. "Like I say all the time, it's very fragile. It's very difficult in college football to bring it every week."
Zane Gonzalez increased Arizona State's advantage to 27-21 by splitting the uprights from 29 yards out early in the fourth, but the Beavers took the lead on their next possession.
Mannion aired out a pass over the middle to Villamin, who caught the ball and outran a defender en route to a 67-yard score and a Beavers lead with 10:55 remaining.
Arizona State got the ball back with just under three minutes to play. Foster's 6-yard catch moved the chains on third down. After Jaelen Strong went down hard to the turf on an incomplete pass and went to the sideline, Doctor picked off Kelly and raced into the end zone for a 35-yard score and a 35-27 lead with 1:38 left.
The Sun Devils started at their own 25, but Oregon State's defense came up big once again as Lavonte Barnett and D.J. Alexander each sacked Kelly, with Alexander knocking down the Arizona State signal-caller for a loss of 13 yards on 4th-and-2 to seal the win.
"Down the stretch, we got down there and had missed opportunities to score," added Graham. "It's just a really disappointing night."
Earlier, Woods stormed through a gaping hole up the middle and down the right sideline for a 78-yard score to give the Beavers a 7-0 lead less than four minutes into the game.
Oregon State's next drive wasn't as successful. Mannion was picked off by Damarious Randall, whose 30-yard return to the Beavers' 18 led to Gonzalez's 28-yard field goal.
The two teams then traded touchdowns. Ward exploded for a 66-yard rushing score to give Oregon State a 14-3 lead, but D.J. Foster hauled in a 17-yard TD pass to cap a 10-play, 75-yard march with over a minute to play in the opening quarter.
After the Beavers punted, Kelly rattled off three straight completions to Strong for a total of 37 yards before hitting Kohl for a 46-yard score and a 17-14 advantage.
Oregon State moved the ball to midfield on its ensuing drive, but Antonio Longino scooped up a fumble and returned it 36 yards for a 24-14 Sun Devils lead.
Gonzalez missed from 30 yards out with under two minutes to play in the first half and Kelly was intercepted by Trequek Zimmerman on the next drive, but the Beavers couldn't capitalize before halftime.
On Oregon State's second drive coming out of the break, Ward ran four straight times for a total of 38 yards, pushing his team into Sun Devils territory. Mannion connected with Bolden on a 16-yard pass and after a short Ward run, Bolden scored on Mannion's 20-yard dart over the middle for a 24-21 game with 3:19 to play in the third quarter.
